Teenage girl (16) appears in Polokwane court for mother’s murder

The girl from Lesedi Park is said to have conspired with a man to kill her mother because she "wanted her own freedom".

POLOKWANE – A 16-year-old girl appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Friday (March 17) on a charge of murder following her arrest the day before.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafelo Mojapelo reports that the girl met with a man, who is also wanted by police, to assist her in killing her mother as she wanted her freedom back.

“The minor suspect met the wanted suspect in Lesedi Park on the outskirts of Polokwane and had a conversation in which she told the him that her mother was denying her freedom and that she wanted to get rid of her. The two then went to the house to wait for the girl’s mother,” his statement read.

The girl’s mother was attacked with a frying pan, collapsed and is said to have been strangled. The duo then dragged her to a bedroom and left her there.

“The minor suspect slept in her mother’s vehicle that night and only reported the matter to the police the following day (March 16). She alleged that she found her mother in a pool of blood,” Mojapelo said.

A case of murder was opened and preliminary investigations revealed that the girl conspired with her accomplice.

“She was arrested and charged while a manhunt for her accomplice was launched. We are calling on a certain Lebalang to avail himself at the nearest police station to assist in the investigation,” he said.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has expressed her shock and urged those with information that can assist in the arrest of the remaining suspect to contact the the investigating officer Sergeant Braidon Pheme on 072 294 4760/ 082 729 0049, the crime stop number on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station.

The teenager will next appear in court on April 4.
