Lebo proves to be a force in the beauty industry

Lebo Ratombo believed that without a degree her future was ruined and went through a depressive period and she contemplated the unimaginable.

POLOKWANE – For Lebo Ratombo, the beauty industry was the lifeline she was looking for.

The 45-year-old is the owner of Beauty Salon, a safe space for her to explore her creativity and give clients an extra boost of confidence.

When she first started doing hair at the age of 15, she couldn’t have fathomed that it would become her bread and butter one day.

“I started doing hair because I liked to look beautiful, and after Gr 12 I used the skills to help pay for my studies. I was enrolled for a B.Sc degree and I was doing exceptionally well. However, life happens and I had to drop out because I could not afford to continue,” she said.

Because she believed that without a degree her future was ruined, she went through a depressive period and she contemplated the unimaginable.

She finally appealed to God to intervene.

“It was then that it was revealed to me that my purpose was to do hair. I didn’t need a degree to become successful, because we are all gifted differently and my life journey can’t be that of someone else.”

She stopped treating styling hair as a side hustle, and in all earnest started working from home, under a tree, until she raised enough money to erect a corrugated shack to operate from.

This, however, was difficult to work from because of the heat, so she eventually saved up enough money to extend her parents’ house and build a garage she could work from.

Since then, she has established herself as a force in the beauty industry.

She has her own salon and now offers all services in the beauty industry. Some of her career highlights include doing the hair and makeup for the provincial cabinet’s 2023 calendar. She also does hair and makeup services for MECs at the annual State of the Province address.

“I also offer my services at weddings, which I also thoroughly enjoy,” she said.

She appealed to up-and-coming hairdressers to complete a hairdressing trade qualification and top it up with a trade facilitator and moderator certification for better opportunities in the industry.

Ratombo currently operates from 12A Library Gardens and can be reached at 083 430 2237.
