Fuel levy cut: Relief at the pumps from November 4

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has announced a temporary fuel levy cut, dropping petrol and diesel prices from November 4 to January.

LIMPOPO – Motorists across Limpopo and South Africa have been handed a much-needed lifeline, with Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announcing a temporary reduction in the general fuel levy during the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement today (October 21).

The move, aimed at easing the country’s high cost of living, will provide direct relief at the petrol pumps just as South Africans prepare for the expensive festive season.

The relief timeline

The levy cuts will be implemented in two phases, taking effect in the coming weeks:

PhaseDatesPetrol ReductionDiesel Reduction
Phase 1November 4 – December 1, 2026R1.50 per litreR3.00 per litre
Phase 2December 2, 2026 – January 5, 2027R1.00 per litreR1.50 per litre

How it’s being funded

This intervention will cost the government R10 billion in foregone revenue.

To cover this without borrowing additional funds, the government will return R10 billion from the Central Energy Fund (CEF) to the National Revenue Fund.

With diesel currently wholesale priced at over R33 per litre and petrol sitting at record highs above R30 per litre, this levy cut cannot come soon enough.
