Polokwane, get ready: Bravery wears a purple Speedo

The Hollard Daredevil Run returns to Peter Mokaba Stadium on October 23, with men in purple Speedos raising awareness of prostate cancer.

POLOKWANE – One way to get people talking is to give them something to talk about – like a group of men running in purple Speedos.

That sight will be on display around Peter Mokaba Stadium at 8:00 AM on October 23, when the annual Hollard Daredevil Run takes place.

Now in its 17th year, the initiative uses the tagline “Lekker Balls. Lekker Life” to raise awareness of prostate and testicular cancers and highlight the importance of early detection.

Participants run 5km in purple Speedos, drawing attention to a serious message: men need to understand their cancer risks, know their bodies and seek medical advice when necessary.

Know your risks, know your body

Adél Kriel, Hollard South Africa’s head of experiential marketing, says the organisers know the eye-catching outfits will attract attention, but the real value lies in what follows.

“There is bravery in putting on a purple Speedo in public, but behind this bold campaign is a very serious message: Know your risks, know your body, and don’t put off getting checked. It could save your life,” she says.

Where the money goes

The more men who take part, the more money can be raised for Cansa and the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

The money supports:

  • Awareness campaigns
  • Prostate-specific antigen screening
  • Patient support

A conversation starter

Kriel says the campaign aims to keep the conversation going long after race day, encouraging men and their families to discuss cancer risks at home, at work and in their communities.

“This October, purple is more than a colour. It’s a conversation starter, but its real impact comes when that conversation extends beyond race day into families, workplaces and communities,” she says.

“The more people who take part, the further that message can reach. You don’t have to be a runner. You just have to be willing to show up for this important cause.”
