Bus crash: President visits injured ANC members
The executives' itinerary today included meeting families of the deceased persons and a meet and greet with patients who were discharged from the hospitals.
POLOKWANE – President Cyril Ramaphosa along with his Limpopo entourage including premier Stanley Mathabatha, Capricorn and city mayors Mamedupi Teffo and John Mpe paid a hospital visit to the ANC members who were admitted with injuries following a bus crash en route to the party’s birthday celebrations in Mbombela around 03:00 on Saturday.
Some of the injured persons were taken to the Mankweng Hospital’s high care unit.
The Department of Transport said an accident report showed that the third bus in a convoy of three, hit the second bus from behind causing it to overturn and veer down an embankment. The buses were transporting ANC members from Molemole’s sub region in Botlokwa.
Spokesperson for the families, ward councillor Emmanuel Rataha said on Sunday, the deceased were identified at the Polokwane Hospital mortuary as Mashao Setabola from Mokomene village, Mosima Makganyoga, Mapula Rakubu, Magret Rakubu and Manti Mafomo all from Eisleben village.

During Ramaphosa’s short visit, Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba was among the health experts who explained to the president the benefits of the MRI machine at the Mankweng Hospital to transferred and local patients. The expert estimated the cost of a single examination to be around R10 000 in private healthcare, but done for free in public health institutions.
Ramaphosa said “this is what we want for our people. Quality healthcare at no cost right in the middle of a rural township, that is what the National Health Insurance idea is also about”.
