The hospital is viewed by Provincial Government as a milestone, as expressed by Premier Chupu Mathabatha and Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba.

In 2017, she tabled a proposal to Treasury that funds be made available for construction of the hospital that would accommodate 688 beds.

In July 2023, the sod-turning ceremony was held at the 25ha of land near EduPark and the city’s sports precinct on Webster Street.

Work on the academic hospital progresses well.

The hospital is built at a cost of R4.5b and construction will continue until 2028, Mathabatha confirmed.

He added that an estimated 2 000 jobs would be created during the construction phase.

The quaternary facility will render services such as oncology, gynaecology, neonatal, paediatrics and cardiology among others, and attracts a range of specialists.
