Police provide more information on mall robbery in Lebowakgomo

One of the suspects was injured in a shootout with police and is currently in hospital under police guard.

POLOKWANE – The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has praised the bravery and professionalism of the officers involved in the arrest of two armed suspects following a robbery at a mall in Lebowakgomo.

The incident, which led to a shootout with the police happened at the Mall@Lebo at around 07:30 this morning (March 13).

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the police responded to an armed robbery in progress at a local cash loan facility.

“Officers were met with gunfire from the suspects upon arrival and a courageous and tactical response by the officers ensured that no civilians were harmed during the exchange of fire,” his statement read.

He explained that one of the suspects used a firearm to break into the ceiling where the duo hid.

“The National Intervention Unit and Limpopo TRT unit were activated and entered the building through the roof. The two suspects were apprehended and two firearms were seized during the arrest,” he said.

Ledwaba added that one of the three suspects sustained injuries during the shootout and was taken to hospital under police guard for medical attention.

“Both suspects are currently in custody and face charges of armed robbery, seven counts of attempted murder, six counts of malicious damage to property and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.”

Hadebe says the team’s quick and decisive action prevented potential harm to innocent civilians and led to the arrest of two dangerous criminals.

The suspects, aged between 27 and 36 years old, are expected to appear before the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court in due course where they will face the aforementioned charges.
