Alleged car smuggler arrested on bypass near Mall of the North

The vehicle was traced and stopped while traveling from Gauteng to the Beitbridge Port of Entry and was reported stolen in Silverton, Pretoria.

POLOKWANE – A 36-year-old man will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court soon on possession of a presumed stolen motor vehicle charges.

This follows the man’s arrest on the N1 bypass near Mall of the North in Polokwane yesterday (April 25).

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the man was arrested by members of the Provincial Anti-Smuggling Task Team together with private security companies following a tip-off about a stolen vehicle believed to have been intended to be smuggled out of the country.

“The vehicle was traced and stopped while traveling from Gauteng to the Beitbridge Port of Entry. The operational members spotted the described vehicle and tactically approached and stopped it,” his statement read.

Ledwaba said preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle was reported stolen in Silverton, Pretoria.

This is not the first time an alleged smuggler has been arrested in Polokwane.

In March, two men were arrested in separate incidents on the N1 south just outside the city for possession of a stolen vehicle and violating the Immigration Act.

Both vehicles were intended to be smuggled out of the country.

The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe lauded the teams involved.

“Police investigations are continue,” Ledwaba concluded.
