Prepare a beautiful DIY flower bouquet for Mom this Mother’s Day

If you're unsure of what to gift your mother this Mother's Day, flowers are always a great idea and that's where Malebo Modiba comes to the rescue.

POLOKWANE – Luther Burbank once said “Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; hey are sunshine, food and medicine to the mind.”

If you’re unsure of what to gift your mother this Mother’s Day, flowers are always a great idea.

That’s where Malebo Modiba comes to the rescue.

The florist and events planner shared with the Polokwane Review-Observer, easy ways for kids (with the help of Dad or older sibling) to create special bouquets for their moms this Mother’s Day.

An example of Malebo Modiba’s work.

“Children will enjoy this do-it-yourself (DIY) project and they’ll enjoy making something special for Mom, something that they’ve never even done before With this gesture, Mom will definitely appreciate and be surprised,” she said.

What you will need:
• A tall vase.
• A pair of scissors.
• Tulips.
• Pink freesias.
• Wax flowers.
• Montecasino aster in white (flowers that look like tiny daisies).
• Solidago (yellow and feathery looking filler).

How you make the bouquet in just eight easy steps:

Step 1: Remove the excess leaves from all the stems and some of the lower flowers on the solidago, wax flowers and montecasino.
Step 2: Cut the stems to a height that is a few inches higher than the height of the vase you are using (Dad can help out to be careful if it’s a glass vase).
Step 3: Separate all flowers into like piles so that they’re easy to grab as you’re creating the arrangement.
Step 4: Take one stem of freesia and one small stem of solidago and place it in the vase.
Step 5: Add a small stem of wax flower or montecasino (make sure you vary the sizes of blooms that you use throughout which will help give the bouquet a natural/organic look when it’s finished).
Step 6: Begin adding additional stems, like the tulips, working your way around the entire arrangement (I would usually spin the vase as I’m adding flowers to make sure there aren’t any uneven areas or big holes forming).
Step 7: Add additional montecasinos and wax flowers and a final tulip or freesia stem (If there are any areas that look less full, add a spring or two of solidago to finish it off). Step 8: Add a gift tag that says ‘Happy Mother’s Day Mom’ on it and you’re ready to bring this over to mom’s bedroom (to add that special or extra treat, ask Dad or your older sibling to help you prepare a yummy breakfast for Mom, place the plate in the tray then place the flower with the vase on the side of the tray as well, and take it to Mom while she’s still in bed).

“You can also use the same flowers to make a mini bouquet instead, without a vase. It’s a very similar process to the vase arrangement, although you start at the back and work toward the front. Tallest flowers are in the back, shortest in the front. Then tie it off with some ribbon and cut the stems at the bottom so they are all the same length. And you’re all set.”
