Polokwane mayor questioned by police over Juju Valley violence

The provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe could not confirm if the gun that Mpe is seen holding in a viral video of the incident was among those tested or confiscated.

POLOKWANE – The Mayor of Polokwane and the ANC’s Peter Mokaba regional chairperson John Mpe is among the latest group of people that were questioned by police about the political violence between ANC and EFF members in Juju Valley, Seshego on May 19.

During a media briefing at the IEC’s Limpopo Results Operation Centre (ROC) at The Ranch Resort earlier today, the provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe confirmed that the ballistic unit were kept on their toes in testing three firearms that were confiscated in relation to the violence that left a nine-year-old girl and a young man shot.

Hadebe told the media that the ballistic results were released on Thursday for further investigation but could not confirm if the gun that Mpe is seen holding in a viral video of the incident was among those that were tested or confiscated.

“Although the mayor came while the violence escalated, he was there and we are looking at everyone who was there. It is not necessary to say whose firearm we confiscated for the reasons of safety against those involved,” she said.

Former EFF regional chair and ANC member Jossey Buthane was arrested and charged with attempted murder along with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition last Friday and was released on R5000 bail on the condition that he distances himself from witnesses until July 2 when he next appears in court.

Hadebe added that two others, one being an EFF member, was also recently arrested for assault.

The Polokwane Review-Observer has contacted the ANC’s regional spokesperson Adolph Rapetswa for comment and was asked to revert back at a later stage in order to confirm the information with Mpe.

Municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala referred the Review-Observer to the ANC for comment.
