Student Funzani Mahomela debuts novel
Twenty-year-old Funzani's novel addresses societal issues as she hopes to provide guidance to young readers.
LIMPOPO – Funzani Mahomele, a 20-year-old second-year student at the University of the Free State, has captured attention with her debut novel titled Grace in the Midst of Pain.
Hailing from Madombidzha and a graduate of Wilmary Combined School, Funzani is currently pursuing a degree in psychology in Bloemfontein.
Her novel delves into profound societal issues including abuse, suicide, bullying, tough paternal love, and domestic violence. Through poignant storytelling, Funzani seeks to shed light on these challenges and offer guidance, particularly to young readers.
“My goal in writing this book was to instil hope in those facing similar struggles,” Funzani explained. “I want readers to understand that despite the hardships, life can improve, and they can overcome any adversity, no matter how daunting.”
Addressing the prevalent issue of bullying, Funzani emphasised its roots in racial prejudice and perceived differences. “Bullying often arises from envy and power dynamics,” she noted.
“Grace in the Midst of Pain provides narratives that encourage positive responses to bullying and promote resilience.”
Funzani’s novel has garnered attention for its exploration of complex themes, offering a beacon of hope to readers grappling with adversity.
