Bennie Boekwurm establishes homework centre

The centre assists learners with homework and provides additional support in areas where extra help is needed.

POLOKWANE – In today’s fast-paced world, many parents struggle to find the time to help their children with homework. Recognising this challenge, Bennie Boekwurm Preschool established a dedicated homework centre aimed at assisting both parents and learners in completing homework efficiently and accurately.

Review spoke with Lianie and Annelie Engelbrecht, the dynamic duo running the centre.

They explained their role in assisting learners with their homework and providing additional support in areas where they may need extra help. Lianie focuses on Gr 1-3, while Tannie Annelie excels in mathematics for Gr 1-7.

Lianie emphasised the distinction between aftercare and a homework centre, noting that they cater to different needs.

“Aftercare looks after the children, whereas a homework centre helps with homework,” she explained.

She added that enrolling a child in a homework centre can relieve the pressure on parents to help with homework after a long workday.

Additionally, some parents may find it challenging to understand the material their children are learning, making it difficult to provide effective assistance.

The homework centre also supports learners with language, reading, and school projects.

Lianie highlighted the benefits of the centre’s personalised approach.

“In a classroom setting, teachers don’t have the time to go over the same material repeatedly. With fewer children and more one-on-one attention at the homework centre, learners can better understand their work, especially in subjects like mathematics, which requires understanding and practice.”

To help learners excel in mathematics, the centre emphasises mastering the times tables.

Every Friday, learners take a times table test, and at the end of each term, they are rewarded based on their grades.

Lianie finds great joy in witnessing the progress of their learners.

“It’s rewarding to see the moment of understanding light up in a child’s eyes. Knowing that a child will never forget something because you explained it to them is a heartwarming experience,” she shared.
