Limpopo police on the hunt for escaped awaiting trial prisoner

Zweli Sibanda was detained on a charge of housebreaking and was expected to appear before the Nkowankowa Magistrate's Court at the time of his escape.

LIMPOPO – The police in Ritavi have initiated a manhunt for a 27-year-old awaiting trial prisoner who escaped from custody on Friday (June 21).

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, Zweli Sibanda was detained on a charge of housebreaking and was expected to appear before the Nkowankowa Magistrate’s Court.

“The accused allegedly escaped while about to attend court. The circumstances surrounding the escape are still under police investigation,” his statement read.

Meanwhile, the provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has ordered the police to intensify their search for Sibanda.

“We are urging anyone with information on Sibanda’s whereabouts to contact Detective Sergeant Lawrance Shikwanbana at 072 373 7399, the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS App,” Ledwaba said.
