Polokwane hosts TSA Mini Tournament

The tournament showcased the rising stars of Polokwane tennis and demonstrated the community’s dedication to fostering the sport’s growth.

POLOKWANE – Nearly 60 tennis players from Limpopo and beyond gathered at the Polokwane Tennis Club last weekend for the Limpopo Baobab Mini 2 Tournament.

This event is part of the TSA Mini Tournaments held across all provinces, offering players the chance to improve their national rankings.

Tournament director Ernest Faver expressed pride in the growing popularity of tennis in the city and praised the junior players for their commitment.

“The level of play was high and fast-paced. We thank everyone who traveled from Gauteng and beyond to support us. Congratulations to all the players who earned top honours. You did us proud,” he said.

Faver also extended his gratitude to the municipality for hosting the tournament at the local courts, emphasising the positive impact on the local economy due to the influx of players and their families.

Local talent shone brightly in the tournament.

Luna Rodriguez and partner Leago Marokane triumphed over their counterparts Liah Rodriguez and Ashley Mhandu with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in the u/16 girls’ doubles.

In the men’s doubles, local players Simba Mhandu and Edwin Selala outplayed Gauteng’s Luke Clifton and Nicolai Paraian, winning 6-4, 6-7 (8), and 10-5.In the boys’ u/16 division, Jannes Becker fought valiantly but ultimately lost to Tatenda Debwe, with a score of 6-4, 2-6, and 10-4.

The boys’ u/12 final saw Limpopo players Philip Snyman and Kamano Mphaphele face off, with Snyman emerging victorious at 3-6, 6-1, and 10-3.

The weekend also featured the Rainbow Kidz Tennis Tournament, aimed at beginner players aged four to 12.

This program teaches tennis fundamentals using age-appropriate equipment and divides young players into groups based on age and skill level.

The young participants had the opportunity to showcase their skills in friendly matches, even keeping score on their own.

Faver expressed his gratitude for the enthusiastic participation of the beginner players, highlighting the importance of nurturing young talent in a fun and enjoyable manner.

The Limpopo Baobab Mini 2 Tournament not only showcased the rising stars of Polokwane tennis but also demonstrated the community’s dedication to fostering the sport’s growth at all levels.
