Krunies drama team excel at Curro Create Theatre Week

Curro Heuwelkruin's drama department shone at Theatre Week receiving awards for acting and technical excellence.

POLOKWANE – Hard work certainly pays off, and this the drama department at Curro Heuwelkruin can attest to.

After a week of intense effort on their drama, The Children, teacher Reggie Goodwin and the team walked away with more than just the winning prize at this year’s national Curro Create Theatre Week.

Curro Create is the creative engine for all Curro schools in the country.

Theatre Week is a whole week dedicated to drama, encompassing rehearsals, mentorships, workshops, theatre games, and watching theatre, all while having fun with like-minded people.

Theatre Week took place last week in Johannesburg, culminating in a final show on Saturday.

The theme was Survivor, and Heuwelkruin, along with Northern Academy, took their plays to the National Youth Theatre Festival 2024.

Goodwin explained that the competition is open to all Curro-affiliated schools.

“There were 40 entries where we had to present our concept. From there, 20 were chosen and had to be refined. Then it was down to 16 and lastly the top five. These five plays went to Theatre Week where they were mentored.”

The mentors for the week included Nico Scheepers (#TeamHeuwelkruin), Mahlatsi Mokgonyana, Penny Youngleson, Lebohang Motaung, and Andi Colombo.

The finals took place on Saturday at HeronBridge College, judged by renowned industry players Christo Davids, Michelle Botes and Billy Langa.

Other professionals involved with Curro Create include Hennie van Greunen, Yvette Hanekom, Jak Brits, Pedro Kruger and Phumeza Damani.
