Noorderland learner advocates for mental health
Choene Henry Phaleng (15) has founded a non-profit organisation dedicated to supporting and raising awareness about issues among young people.
POLOKWANE – The 15-year-old Choene Henry Phaleng, a learner at Noorderland High School, has taken a remarkable step towards promoting mental wellness by founding the Emotional Equilibrium Mental Health Organisation.
This non-profit organisation, created in collaboration with fellow learners Hatlani Malumbete, Keabetswe Ramashala and Lerato Motloung, is dedicated to supporting mental health and raising awareness about mental health issues among young people.
Choene said it is important to manage one’s time in balancing one’s academic responsibilities, with the commitment to the NGO.
He manages this by focusing on his studies during school hours and setting aside specific times for his charity work. Additionally, he delegates tasks to his team members whenever possible to ensure the organisation runs smoothly.
As a young founder, Choene faces challenges such as balancing responsibilities, limited resources, and navigating spaces typically dominated by adults. Despite these hurdles, he has a clear vision for the future.
In the next five years, he envisions Emotional Equilibrium as a leading mental health organisation with a strong online presence, multiple chapters and one that makes a significant impact in reducing the stigma around mental health.
The organisation, he said, plans to expand its support services, collaborate with schools and develop innovative resources tailored for young people.
