Northern Academy hits high notes in A Capella competition

Northern Academy secures second place and best Afrikaans song performance at Animato 2024 A Capella competition.

POLOKWANE – Cayla Marais and a group of learners from Northern Academy recently participated in the Animato 2024 A Capella singing competition, held at the Voortrekker Monument from October 4-5.

Schools from Limpopo, the Free State, Mpumalanga, Gauteng and the Western Cape took part in the event.

Northern Academy performed in the ensemble division as ‘The High Notes’ and achieved an impressive second place.

They also won the award for best performance of an Afrikaans FAK prescribed song in the ensemble category.

The Animato A Capella competition aims to promote light music, dance, and the creation of innovative productions. According to Lizelle van Staden, the competition’s director, groups can enter under the ensemble or production sections, and are encouraged to cover their chosen songs.

Each year, one prescribed work from the FAK song collection must be reworked while keeping the original theme intact. This year’s song was ‘Daar kom die Alibama’.
Marais expressed her pride in the learners’ efforts.

“They worked incredibly hard. This is the second year we’ve participated, and while we won last year, placing second this year is still a national achievement. I’m honoured to help them develop their God-given talent and watch their self-confidence grow,” she said.
