UL increases mental health initiatives following student’s death

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of death of a 19-year-old student who was found in his room.

POLOKWANE – As the final examinations were scheduled to begin at the University of Limpopo on Tuesday, the university community is still coming to terms with the death of a 19-year-old student who was found dead in his room earlier this month.

According to police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba, an investigation is underway to determine the cause of death.

Kamogelo Poto, the president of the Student Representative Council (SRC), stressed the importance of maintaining both physical and mental health, particularly during this stressful time.

“In collaboration with the department responsible for student counselling, we have launched a mental health awareness campaign this past week, encouraging students who are experiencing difficulties to seek assistance. We are also working closely with campus security to ensure there is increased patrolling off-campus, as crime in off-campus residences is a growing concern,” Poto stated.

In addition to these initiatives, the SRC has committed to addressing the concerns of students by mediating with university management on several issues, including extending library and laboratory operating hours, as well as securing 90 university-funded tablets and 110 laptops for students in need.

The university’s management expressed sorrow over the student’s passing and expressed confidence in the Mankweng police to thoroughly investigate the case.

“Out of respect for the family and the ongoing investigation, the University of Limpopo will not be making any further statements,” noted the marketing and communication division.
