Breast cancer and self-care event in Seshego

Non-profit organisation, Fixing Each Other's Crown, raises breast cancer awareness, fostering collaboration and inclusivity in Seshego community.

POLOKWANE – The non-profit organisation Fixing Each Other’s Crown held a breast cancer awareness event at Triangle Park in Seshego on Saturday, aimed at raising awareness about breast cancer and highlighting the importance of self-care for both women and men.

The event’s mission was to provide a safe, collaborative space for education, empowerment, and holistic wellness, particularly for those impacted by breast cancer.

“We walked in solidarity with survivors, caregivers, and those currently battling the disease, while honouring those we have lost,” said the founder, Tsakani Mpofu.

The event aimed to foster collaboration among various healthcare and wellness organisations to support individuals affected by breast cancer.

“We sought to break the stigma and ensure people are informed about their health. Our lineup of speakers addressed critical topics, from mental resilience to physical health, reminding everyone that breast cancer is not just a women’s issue; men are also affected, and it’s crucial to include them in the conversation,” Mpofu said.

She said it is important to have regular health check-ups and for the community to support and empower each other.

She reiterated that their goal is to change lives by breaking the silence around breast cancer, particularly in underprivileged communities. “We aim to create continuous awareness, not just during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but all year round, encouraging regular self-examinations and screenings,” she remarked.

“By collaborating with local health practitioners and community leaders, and utilising mobile health clinics, we can provide access to testing, education, and support for those in need. We will be running community workshops to ensure awareness extends to both men and women,” she added.

Mpofu concluded by affirming that everyone deserves the opportunity to be informed, tested, and to lead a healthy life.
