Polokwane dermatologist’s tips to protect your lips

Dermatologist Nthabiseng Chauke warns that lips are highly vulnerable to sun damage, she shares her tips on preventative measures.

POLOKWANE – Dermatologist Nthabiseng Chauke from Polokwane says your lips are more vulnerable to the sun’s rays than any other area of skin.

“The skin on your lips is thinner and contains less pigment to protect cells from the sun’s damaging rays. Repeated or long-term exposure of your lips to solar ultraviolet radiation can lead to actinic cheilitis,” Chauke explained.

To combat this risk, she emphasised the importance of using topical options for sun protection, such as creams or lip balms containing fluorouracil, aldara, compounded fluorouracil, and calcipotriol.

Chauke recommended preventative measures including wearing hats, using sunscreen, and applying a moisturising SPF lip balm.

“If you’re going to be in direct sunlight for extended periods – such as in fields like journalism, law enforcement, farming, or sport – always choose a lip sunscreen with an SPF 30+ rating and reapply frequently. This will filter out harmful UV rays and provide essential protection.”

Chauke concluded saying lips are often overlooked when it comes to sun care, which can be detrimental, especially during sunny or hot seasons.

“The skin of your lips can’t protect itself from harmful sun damage, so it’s crucial to remember that your lips need extra care at all times.”
