Level 2 severe thunderstorm warning issued for Polokwane

A severe thunderstorm warning will remain in place on Monday, while more rain is expected this week. We break down this week's weather forecast for you.

POLOKWANE – A severe weather alert has been issued for Polokwane as a relentless downpour of heavy rain continues to batter the city.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a severe Level 2 thunderstorm warning for today, cautioning residents to exercise extreme caution amidst hazardous conditions.

The warning has been in place since 00:00 this morning and will cease at 22:59 tonight.

According to the SAWS, severe Level 2 thunderstorms are high in likelihood with minor impact.

With the warning in place, the weather service says its impact includes localised flooding of susceptible low-lying areas, informal settlements and susceptible roads; minor motor vehicle accidents due to poor driving visibility; localised damage to informal houses over open areas due to strong winds and localised service disruption due to power surges.

The weather service suggests seeking shelter immediately, if you are outside, and not to seek shelter under a tree, telephone or power lines, on hilltops or under unprotected gazebos or tents.

“If possible stay indoors away from metal objects. Do not go fishing or play golf as both the golf clubs and fishing rods are a good conductor of electricity and avoid low lying roads and bridges. Be aware that any combination of hail, strong winds, heavy rain and/or excessive lightning can accompany the storms,” their website reads.

Weather outlook for the rest of the week:

Wet weather is expected to remain until the middle of the week with showers and thundershowers forecast.

According to AccuWeather, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday will see a 89%, 76% and 60% chance of rain respectively.

The showers will also bring cool to mild temperatures along with it with a mild week on the cards for Polokwane.

Temperatures this week will range between 21°C and 29°C with Monday and Tuesday being the coolest days of the week and Sunday being the warmest.

Partly cloudy conditions will persist while a sunny and beautiful Saturday is expected.
