Seshego hosts 3rd annual community chess tournament
Tumelo Mmola and Joe Mahamole hosted their third annual chess tournament in Seshego, promoting local talent and community engagement.
POLOKWANE – Last Saturday, Tumelo Mmola and Joe Mahamole hosted their third annual chess tournament at Boiketlo Primary School in Seshego, to promote participation within the local community.
“By bringing tournaments closer to the people, we want to encourage consistent play, nurture talent, strengthen skills and connect with others who share a passion for the game,” Mmola said.
Schools that participated included Flora Park Comprehensive Primary School, Laerskool Pietersburg-Oos, Pietersburg English Medium Primary School, Northern Academy and independent entries.
Tumelo said the tournament is growing each year.
“This year we had the strongest tournament yet, because we were graced by the presence of an international chess master, Johannes Mabusela.”
The tournament also saw players from Gauteng and locally as far as Bochum compete.
“It was a great turnout. With the hope of a few sponsorships next year, we will do even better.”
Section A and B winners walked away with cash prizes and medals, while those in section C received medals and certificates.
In December, players who participated in a chess tournament held at The Ranch Resort, qualified to compete in a national tournament in the Western Cape in April, Mmola confirmed.
