Thohoyandou writer publishes Tshivenda maths guide
Rudzani Mafhege publishes a Tshivenda maths study guide to help Gr 7 learners master mathematics in their native language.

LIMPOPO – Writer Rudzani David Mafhege from Vondwe-Lwavhune village has published a mathematics study guide in Tshivenda, titled ‘Tshiphiri Tsha Mbalo’ (The Secret of Mastering Mathematics).
Aimed at Gr 7 learners, the book seeks to simplify mathematical concepts and make learning more accessible.
Mafhege, who is a self-employed carpenter, has been passionate about writing since 1994.
Over the years, he has written radio dramas for Phalaphala FM, winning numerous writing competitions, including the M-Net first prize in 2004 for his novel, ‘Ndila dza Funguvhu’.
His books have also been used at the University of Venda, he said.

Motivated by his love for education and the promotion of Tshivenda as language, he decided to create a mathematics guide after noticing how many young learners struggle with the subject.
“Mathematics is a vital subject that can unlock the doors of learning. This study guide will help to bridge the gap for Tshivenda-speaking students by explaining concepts like fractions, equations, and ratios in a language they understand,” he explained.
Mafhege told CV that there are challenges to being an author, including having to do extensive research, a lack of support sometimes, and being underestimated, but that his determination kept him going.
