Two killed in N1 head-on collision outside Polokwane

Authorities are investigating the cause of an early morning head-on collision on the N1 near Lunds that led to the death of two people.

Two people were killed in a head-on collision involving a SUV and a bakkie on the N1-26 near Lunds early this morning (April 8).

The collision, according to the accident report, happened just before 07:45 when the driver of the SUV reportedly lost control of the vehicle and veered into oncoming traffic, colliding with the bakkie.

The spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Tidimalo Chuene, said the female driver of the SUV was declared dead on the scene.

The driver of the bakkie sustained serious injuries and was treated on site before being transported to a nearby medical facility.

Chuene confirmed that authorities are investigating the cause of the crash.

The N1 was temporarily closed to allow emergency personnel to clear the scene but has since been reopened to motorists.

POLOKWANE – Motorists travelling on the N1 to and from Polokwane are being diverted to the R101 following a fatal head-on collision this morning.

Reports suggest the collision occurred just past the Ultra City on the N1 South prompting a full closure of the highway.

Traffic is currently being diverted via the R101 from Nylplaza as emergency services attend to the scene.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the collision lead to two fatalities, however, authorities have yet to verify this information.

The spokesperson for the Department of Transport and Community Safety, Tidimalo Chuene, told the Polokwane Review-Observer that updates will be shared as soon as more information is received from the scene.
