Northern Academy learner joins SA’s u/20 national soccer team

Thato Mpati (19) joins South Africa’s u/20 national soccer team after leading his school to a national championship win.

POLOKWANE – Thato Mpati, a Gr 12 learner at Meridian Northern Academy, has secured a place in the u/20 national soccer team.

The 19-year-old, who plays as a first-team member, has showcased exceptional talent and played a key role in the school’s soccer success.

Last year, he was instrumental in the team’s victory in the prestigious Kay Motsepe Schools Championship, where they were crowned u/19 national football champions.

Having started playing soccer at the age of six, Mpati believes the sport runs in his family’s blood.

“For generations, there have been soccer players in my family, so I didn’t have a choice. Although no one has gotten as far as I have, I feel their blessings are coming to me,” he said.

Mpati’s dedication and hard work have paid off, as his efforts have been recognised. He focused on performing well in every match, helping his team to win.

Living in the school’s hostel has been an advantage, allowing him to use the on-site gym and train whenever he has the opportunity.

Balancing soccer and academics as a Gr 12 learner, has however, not been easy.

“It’s really tough. There’s a lot of pressure to do well in both areas. I just need to hang in there and earn my matric certificate,” he admitted.

Thato has now joined the national squad as they begin their Afcon preparation camp, which includes two friendly matches against Botswana’s u/20 team.

The first match was held on March 22, and the second was scheduled for March 25 at the UJ Soweto campus.

“At national level, I know that I am no one. I need to work hard and perform my best to market myself to the world,” he said.
