POLOKWANE – Many motorists will be preparing for the long drive between Pretoria and Polokwane and to other parts of Limpopo this long weekend.

Thousands of motorists make use of the N1 on a daily basis and the long weekend is no exception, with high traffic volumes expected between Gauteng and Musina via Polokwane and the R71 between Polokwane and Tzaneen.

The six main toll gates on this route include Nyl, Kranskop, Carousel and Pumulani going south and the Baobab and Capricorn when travelling north.

Road safety campaigns intensify

In response to the anticipated surge in traffic, the Department of Transport has launched the 2025 Easter Road Safety Campaign.

Minister Barbara Creecy emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating that it forms part of a year-round effort to enhance road safety.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has also issued a call for caution, urging all road users to prioritise safety.

They highlight the necessity for drivers to rest adequately, ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and avoid overloading.

Public transport operators are reminded to adhere strictly to safety regulations to prevent accidents during this busy period.

Tips for Travelers

  • Plan ahead: Allow extra travel time to accommodate potential delays.

  • Vehicle check: Ensure your vehicle is in good condition before embarking on your journey.

  • Rest well: Avoid driving while fatigued; take regular breaks.

  • Obey traffic laws: Adhere to speed limits and road signs.

  • Stay informed: Monitor traffic updates and plan your route accordingly.
