Louis Trichardt mourns ex-principal’s tragic death
Former principal Erick Tshikota dies in a house fire after allegedly setting himself alight; community mourns as police investigate.
LIMPOPO – In a tragic incident that has left the Louis Trichardt community in mourning, the 68-year-old former school principal Erick Tshikota died after he, according to reports, apparently set himself alight at his home in Newtown last Tuesday evening.
Tshikota, who lived alone, is believed to have locked himself inside his house before the fire broke out. The first reports of the fire started circulating on social media shortly before 20:00. Residents nearby reported hearing a loud bang around sunset, which helped them quickly locate the source of the fire.
Emergency services were called to the scene, but sadly, Tshikota had already succumbed to his injuries. News of the incident spread rapidly, drawing shocked neighbours and community members to the scene.
Friends, family, and former colleagues were left devastated and puzzled by the incident. “It came as a shock to us, having to lose such an intelligent person like him. We are very sad,” said his sister, Midana Tshikota.
A close acquaintance of the deceased, who spoke with him on Tuesday morning, said Tshikota had not displayed any signs of distress.
“We are still in shock and cannot understand what might have led to this,” he said.
Originally from Tshiozwi village, Tshikota was known as a dedicated teacher and a pillar in his community. “He was always ready to go the extra mile, both for his family and the community,” said Shaft Matumba, a leader in the local civic organisation.
Matumba also urged community members to reach out for support in times of emotional distress. “We encourage people to share their problems or seek professional help. No one should suffer in silence.”
Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire. “The exact cause of the incident is still unclear. An inquest has been opened,” said SAPS Vhembe spokesperson, Warrant Officer Vuledzani Dathi.
