Heavy Easter traffic expected on N1 and other Limpopo routes today

Heavy traffic is expected on the N1 and other Limpopo routes this Easter Monday with authorities urging road safety and patience as volumes increase.

POLOKWANE – Motorists travelling on the last day of the Easter long weekend can expect heavy traffic volumes on major routes in and out of Limpopo, including the N1 between Makhado and Pienaarsrivier.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety says congestion is anticipated from mid-morning through to the evening on the N1, as well as the R101, R71, R81, R36 and R37, as holidaymakers return home.

Transport spokesperson Tidimalo Chuene said law enforcement agencies remain on high alert, with officers strategically deployed along key routes to manage traffic flow and crack down on traffic violations.

“Their presence is aimed at ensuring a safer journey for all road users,” she said.

Motorists are urged to prioritise road safety by:

  • Taking a break every two hours or 200km

  • Ensuring all passengers are buckled up

  • Avoiding overloading passengers or goods

  • Obeying speed limits

  • Driving sober

  • Watching out for pedestrians

Travellers are advised to plan ahead, check for real-time traffic updates and allow extra travel time to accommodate any unexpected delays.

Meanwhile, the Bakwena N1N4 route will peak between 09:00 this morning and midnight as travellers return home.

Peak times of heavy traffic and slow pace can be expected from 12:00 to 21:00.
