Vhembe community demands justice after GBV murder

A Mutale community mourns Vhutshilo Nefuranyele, allegedly murdered by her ex-partner. The case sparks outrage and renewed calls to end GBV.

LIMPOPO – A case of gender-based violence has shaken the village of Thengwe-Mutangula following the brutal murder of the 38-year-old Vhutshilo Nefuranyele, allegedly by her estranged partner, Lucky Makonyololo.

The accused appeared in a packed Mutale Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday, facing a murder charge. He was not asked to plead and was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on June 2. According to Vhembe SAPS acting spokesperson, WO Vuledzani Dathi, the murder occurred in the early hours of Sunday, April 27.

“It is alleged that the suspect caught the victim in a compromising situation with another man, leading to a confrontation. The victim fled but was later found lying in the street with two stab wounds to her forehead,” said Dathi.

The crime has sparked outrage among community members and activists, including the Economic Liberation Front of South Africa (ELF SA), who gathered outside court carrying placards demanding justice. ‘Justice for Vhutshilo’ and ‘Lucky Must Fall’ were among the slogans chanted by the crowd.

Community leader Khodani Mudanalwo condemned the act. “We don’t want abusive men living among us. The suspect must rot in jail.” Mudanalwo confirmed that the community will oppose the accused’s bail application and vowed to take action against unoccupied properties, which they believe contribute to rising crime in the area.

A solemn funeral for Vhutshilo was held on Thursday, where speakers expressed anger and sorrow, calling for an end to violence against women and children.

The victim’s brother, Avhurengwi Nefuranyele, refuted the police’s version of events, stating the murder did not take place in the suspect’s home and that the relationship had ended months ago.

“He had no right to be at my sister’s house. Instead of moving on, he chose violence. We are heartbroken,” he said.
