Human remains found by shepherds near Thohoyandou
Shepherds discovered human remains near Mbahe village, prompting an inquest as police investigate and await DNA results.
LIMPOPO – Residents of the rural village of Mbahe near Tshififi outside Thohoyandou were left stunned after human remains were discovered by local shepherds last Monday at approximately 14:00.
According to community leader Fhatuwani Mphadi, the shepherds were searching for livestock when they came across the remains. They immediately alerted local leadership, who then contacted the police.
Mphadi said the discovery has raised concern among residents of Mbahe and nearby villages such as Tshififi and Tshitanini, as two individuals had been reported missing in 2023 and 2024, and have not yet been found. He added that the remains may possibly belong to one of the missing persons.
“At this stage, we do not suspect foul play, and we will fully cooperate with the authorities while awaiting DNA test results,” Mphadi said.
Vhembe police spokesperson, WO Vuledzani Dathi, confirmed that an inquest has been opened at the Thohoyandou police.
Upon arrival at the scene, police recovered a rope hanging from a tree, a green jersey, a cellphone, and a pair of black sandals near the remains. The identity of the deceased has not yet been determined.
Police are urging anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to contact Sgt Tshikonelo Oscar Mudau at 076 387 7780. Investigations are ongoing.
