Limpopo cop faces culpable homicide over child’s (8) death

A Motetema SAPS member was arrested in Mogaung on Friday night for allegedly driving drunk and fatally hitting an eight-year-old boy.

LIMPOPO – A 36-year-old police constable stationed at the Motetema Police Station in the Sekhukhune District has been arrested following the death of an eight-year-old boy in Mogaung Village, in the Hlogotlou policing area, on Friday night (August 8).

The Limpopo police spokesperson, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba said the incident occurred at approximately 19:15 when the constable, allegedly under the influence, was driving a state vehicle towards Motetema and struck the child.

“Emergency medical services responded to the scene, but the victim was declared dead on arrival. Preliminary investigations indicate the officer may have been driving while intoxicated. The Independent Police Investigative Directorate has been notified and will lead further investigations,” Ledwaba said.

The constable is expected to appear before the Nebo Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (August 11) on charges of culpable homicide and driving under the influence.

The provincial police commissioner,Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the arrest, stating that law enforcement officials must uphold the SAPS code of ethics and conduct at all times.

“Police investigations continue,” he said.
