Lebowakgomo principal granted bail after alleged sexual assault of learner

A Lebowakgomo school principal has been granted bail after being arrested and charged with the alleged sexual assault of a 17-year-old female learner.

POLOKWANE – A school principal (51) was granted R3 000 bail in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (August 21) after being accused of sexually assaulting a learner at a local school in the Lebowakgomo policing area.

The Limpopo police said the alleged incident occurred mid-morning on August 16 when a female learner (17) went to the suspect’s office to retrieve her confiscated cellphone.

Prior to that, the learner is said to have made several attempts to collect her phone but the suspect was not available.

“When she returned to collect her cellphone on the day of the incident, the principal allegedly instructed her to come alone to his office. The victim informed her friend to wait outside before returning to the office, where the suspect allegedly touched her inappropriately and sexually assaulted her,” the Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba’s statement read.

Mashaba said the victim reported the incident to her family, who then alerted the Lebowakgomo Police Station on Wednesday (August 20).

“The case was immediately referred to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, and the suspect was arrested and charged with sexual assault,” Mashaba said.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed her concern over the incident, stating: “It is deeply disturbing when those entrusted with the care and education of our children allegedly abuse their positions of authority. Schools should be safe havens for learning, not places where children fear for their safety.”

Meanwhile, the Limpopo Department of Education confirmed the suspect’s immediate suspension and an investigation into the matter.

The department’s director of communication services, Mike Maringa said they will not make further comments on the matter as it is before court and that support will be offered to the victim through psycho-social sessions and counselling.

The Education MEC, Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya, said the accusation is a set-back to efforts taken to address gender based violence and the rights of learners.

The suspect will next appear in court on October 20.
