SAPS recover R700k Mercedes after shootout on N1 near Botlokwa

A police officer was injured in a shootout on the N1 near Botlokwa before two suspects were arrested and a stolen Mercedes Benz recovered.

POLOKWANE – A high-risk joint police operation led to the arrest of two suspects and the recovery of a stolen luxury vehicle following a shootout on the N1 near Botlokwa yesterday (August 21).

The Limpopo police say an operation was launched after intelligence was received regarding two vehicles (a Mercedes Benz C200 and an Audi A3) stolen during a business robbery in Boksburg North earlier this month.

The Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says information indicated that the suspects planned to smuggle the vehicles into Zimbabwe through the Beitbridge Border Post.

“A tactical team intercepted the vehicles near Botlokwa and when officers attempted to stop them, the occupants of the Audi opened fire, sparking a shootout in which an officer was injured. Despite coming under attack, police pressed on. The Audi managed to escape, but the Mercedes Benz was cornered,” his statement reads.

Two suspects, a South African (25) and a foreign national (48) were arrested at the scene.

“The recovered vehicle is valued at about R700 000. Cases of attempted murder and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle have been opened at the Botlokwa Police Station. The suspects will appear before the Sekgosese Magistrate’s Court on Monday (August 25).

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, commends the bravery of the officers.

“This operation reflects the power of collaboration between provincial teams, national detectives, and the private security sector. Our members displayed extraordinary courage, and we wish the injured officer a speedy recovery.”

Mashaba says a manhunt is underway for the suspects who escaped.
