Vhembe baker turns passion into thriving bakery

From her mother’s kitchen to Thohoyandou’s favourite bakery, Shonie Mpilo shares how passion and hard work built Bliss Bakery.

LIMPOPO – Shonie Mpilo, a Vhembe entrepreneur who has turned her passion for baking into a successful business, is a great reason to show off Women’s Month.

Hailing from Thohoyandou block G Ext, Mpilo is the founder of Bliss Bakery, known for its cinnamon rolls, mini banana loaves, buttery biscuits and fluffy muffins.

Her business also contributes to local food security while inspiring other female entrepreneurs.

Bliss Bakery began in her mother’s kitchen, drawing inspiration from the welcoming spirit of Venda culture. Mpilo (26) credits her grandmother for teaching her to cook and bake from the age of 10.

“My grandmother gave me the best childhood, full of love. I wanted to share my passion with the world, not just my family. A baker who loves what she does lets that love shine through everything she produces,” she said.

While the journey has been challenging, Mpilo describes it as a source of joy.

“Competition is fierce, but having a specialty helps. Our cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting are a crowd favourite. ”Bliss stands for happiness and paradise, I want my baked goods to take people’s taste buds straight there,” she explained.

Keys to her success, she says, are consistency, goal-setting and hard work.

“My aim is to consistently produce high-quality baked goods while achieving growth. I want to exceed customer expectations, build a loyal clientele, and launch a breakfast package that can become a signature item,” Mpilo said.

Beyond business, her bakery is a community hub.

“The aroma, taste and social part of a bakery bring comfort and nostalgia. ”I’m grateful for the support and honest feedback from my customers. I want Bliss Bakery to be a place where people can gather, enjoy treats and feel joy,” she added.
