118 motorists arrested for drunk driving in Limpopo during September

Over 100 motorists were arrested for drunk driving in Limpopo during September as the Transport MEC warns of an intensified Phuza Weekend Operation ahead of festive season.

LIMPOPO – The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has warned motorists against reckless behaviour after 118 drivers were arrested for drunk driving in September as part of the ongoing Phuza Weekend Operation.

The arrests, made across all five districts of the province, highlight the department’s intensified crackdown on intoxicated driving.

Transport spokesperson, Tidimalo Chuene said law enforcement officers arrested 35 drivers over the past weekend for driving under the influence.

The highest blood alcohol reading was recorded in Mopani District at 1.17mg/1000ml.

Breakdown of arrests per district:

  • Capricorn District: Four drivers

  • Mopani District: One driver

  • Vhembe District: 13 drivers

  • Waterberg District: 17 drivers

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, commended officers for their efforts and delivered a stern warning to motorists.

“Every arrest is a step towards safer roads. Drunk driving is not only illegal, it is selfish and deadly. Too many families are left broken because of one person’s reckless choice to drink and drive,” she said.

Mathye urged motorists to make responsible choices: “If you drink, do not get behind the wheel. Designate a sober driver, make use of public transport, or arrange for a ride-hailing service.”

The Phuza Weekend Operation will be sustained and intensified in the lead-up to the festive season.

Motorists are warned that anyone caught driving under the influence will face the full might of the law.
