Olifantspoort upgrade project on track with Pump Station 1 repairs complete

The Olifantspoort shutdown is progressing as planned, with Pump Station 1 repairs complete and water supply resuming.

POLOKWANE – Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) has confirmed that major repair and upgrade work at Pump Station 1 of the Olifantspoort Water Scheme has been successfully completed, with water supply beginning to resume in affected areas.

LNW spokesperson Joe Makhafola said the shutdown, which began yesterday (October 1), included the installation of new pumps and repairs to the main transformer at Pump Station 1 (PS1).

“The transformer repair was also successfully completed. The old pumps have now been isolated for replacement, and the pump station was restarted at 11:00 today to resume water supply to Lebowakgomo,” his statement read.

Makhfola added that work at Pump Stations 2 and 3 is still in progress, focusing on the replacement of valves and pump connections.

“Completion of these activities is expected later this afternoon, after which supply operations will gradually stabilise across affected areas,” he said.

The upgrades form part of a broader project aimed at ensuring long-term reliability and efficiency of the Olifantspoort Scheme.

The work is expected to reach practical completion by December, with electronic communication systems and quality assurance scheduled for early 2026.
