The Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba said the Zimbabwean bus driver (42) was transporting 54 passengers from Randfontein to Zimbabwe, with several pick-up stops including Midrand and Pretoria.

“It is alleged that the gunmen, who were seated at the back of the bus, suddenly drew their weapons and pointed them at passengers. When one passenger tried to disarm them, a struggle ensued, and multiple shots were fired. A 30-year-old male passenger and a 25-year-old female died at the scene. The suspects then robbed passengers of cash and cellphones before fleeing in a vehicle that had been following the bus,” Ledwaba’s statement read.

Cases of murder and armed robbery have been opened.

The Chronicle, a Zimbabwean publication, posted a video on Thursday night (October 9) of the passengers disembarking after arriving in Bulawayo.

The provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, condemned the brutal killings and has ordered the establishment of a dedicated task team to track down the suspects.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact Sergeant Matsipi Makwela on 076 786 1447, the Crime Stop number (08600 10111), or report anonymously via the MySAPS App.
