Technical failures delay water supply from Olifantspoort Plant

Technical failures and maintenance issues continue to plague the Olifantspoort Plant frustrating Polokwane residents after a week of water shortages

13:44

POLOKWANE – While power supply has been restored to the Olifantspoort Plant following this morning’s outage, Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) says other issues detected will delay the return of water supply to affected residents.

According to a statement by the Polokwane Municipality, the delay is caused by a leak as well as gasket failure on delivery pipes at Pump Station 1 (PS1).

“The contractor is on site to assess the leak and is also in the process of replacing the gaskets to restore normal functionality,” the municipal spokesperson Thipa Selala said.

He added that LNW will advise further on a reinstatement time.

These failures at the plant follow last week’s planned shutdown for the installation of new pumps and the repair of the main transformer at PS1, an event that left many residents frustrated after facing nearly a week without proper water supply.

The ongoing challenges signal further difficulty for residents, as two more shutdowns are already planned for November at the Olifantspoort Plant for additional maintenance work.

POLOKWANE – Lepelle Northern Water (LNW) has announced a temporary shutdown of its Olifantspoort Plant and Pump Station 2 this morning (Wednesday, 22 October 2025) due to a power outage affecting the system.

According to Eskom, the outage began at 07:00 and is expected to be restored by 11:00 once repairs are completed.

LNW spokesperson Joe Makhafola said several areas are experiencing low water pressure and temporary interruptions as a result.

The affected areas include:

  • The Polokwane CBD
  • Seshego
  • Lepelle Nkumpi Local Municipality

The utility says normal operations will resume as soon as power is restored.
