Gr R learner killed after being hit by scholar transport bus in Ga-Molepo

A Grade R learner from Ga-Molepo, outside Mankweng, died after being hit by a scholar transport bus, says the Limpopo Education Department.

POLOKWANE – The Limpopo Department of Education has expressed deep sorrow following the death of a Grade R learner from Mamothalo Primary School in Ga-Molepo, who was hit by a scholar transport bus this morning (October 24).

According to Ward 5 Councillor Kgala Legodi, the tragedy occurred when several learners were pushing to get onto the bus.

The young girl reportedly fell and was pushed under the vehicle, which then drove over her.

She was declared dead on the scene.

Legodi said the incident has left the community in shock.

The department, meanwhile, said it is awaiting a detailed report on the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya conveyed her condolences to the bereaved family, the school, and the community.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of such a young life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, educators, and learners during this painful time,” she said.

The MEC added that psychosocial support will be provided to the affected learners, teachers, and family members.

“I urge everyone to remain calm as investigations are currently underway,” she added.

The department urged scholar transport operators to exercise extreme caution when transporting learners and to ensure proper supervision during boarding and drop-off times.
