Shebeshxt’s bail bid challenged over pending violent crime cases

Police detail multiple pending cases, past convictions and shooting allegations as Shebeshxt’s bail application resumes in Polokwane.

POLOKWANE – The bail application of popular musician Lehlogonolo Katlego “Shebeshxt” Chauke resumed in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, where the investigating officer gave detailed testimony opposing his release.

Investigating officer Phaladi Makola took the stand and outlined a long list of past convictions, pending matters and alleged violent offences linked to the accused.

Makola revealed that Chauke has a prior conviction from 2018 in Lebowakgomo, where he paid a R300 admission of guilt.

He further told the court that Chauke currently faces two attempted murder charges, with both matters set for trial between February 18 and 20 , 2026 in the Lebowakgomo Regional Court.

In those cases, the court had granted him bail of R5 000 with conditions that he may not commit a Schedule 1 offence.

“His bail conditions were that he should not commit a schedule one offence, however, he committed them,” Makola testified.

According to the investigating officer, both murder victims died in stabbing-related incidents. In one case, a sharp object was used, while in the second incident, the victim was stabbed with a knife.

Makola also confirmed that Chauke faces additional pending charges, including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and robbery with aggravating circumstances. All these matters have been centralised and are ready for trial.

Items allegedly stolen in the robbery include a Huawei P Smart cellphone valued at R6 000, a car battery and a Nike cap.

The officer went on to describe a separate shooting incident in Seshego Zone 2, in which the complainant claimed he approached Chauke at a music festival to greet him.

According to the statement, Chauke allegedly drew a firearm and shot the victim, who was rushed to hospital. The firearm has not been recovered.

Makola told the court that Chauke was accompanied by an alleged accomplice, Thabiso Malatji, who also fired a shot during the incident.

Malatji’s firearm was confiscated and sent for ballistic analysis, and a warrant of arrest has since been issued for him.

Makola also raised concerns about the withdrawal of some of Chauke’s earlier cases, stating that in one instance the complainant’s signature had allegedly been forged.

“In another case the complainant’s signature was faked. When I visited him, he was surprised the case was withdrawn. We checked the signatures and compared them; they were not the same,” he said.

He added that Chauke has never been a licensed firearm owner.

The bail hearing continues.
