POLOKWANE – Learner placement for entry grades in Polokwane and surrounding areas remains a challenge as demand continues to exceed available space at several schools, the Department of Education has confirmed.

Despite the pressure, the department says steady progress is being made ahead of the 2026 academic year.

Department spokesperson Mike Maringa said 84 013 Gr R learners have been placed, with 320 still awaiting placement. In Gr 1, 109 425 learners have been placed, while 216 remain unplaced.

For Gr 8, 112 624 learners have secured placements, with 781 still on waiting lists.

Urging adherence to feeder zones

Maringa said many delays were caused by parents applying at schools outside their feeder zones, which complicates the placement process.

“We urge parents and guardians to prioritise schools within their local zones to avoid delays and ensure that all learners are accommodated,” he said.

A new school to ease congestion

To ease pressure, the department plans to open Bendor High School in the foreseeable future, which will initially operate from Capricorn High School premises.

“The opening of Bendor High School will bring much-needed relief. Learners who cannot be placed at preferred schools within their zones will now have an alternative option, reducing congestion in high-demand areas,” Maringa said.

He added that the department remains committed to placing all learners.

“We will continue working with schools, district offices and parents to close the remaining gaps,” he said.
