UPDATE: Police confirm 2 arrests for prohibited items at Polokwane cells

Police have confirmed the arrest of two awaiting-trial prisoners for drugs and other prohibited items at the Polokwane Police Cells.

POLOKWANE – Police have confirmed the arrest of two awaiting-trial prisoners for the possession of drugs and other prohibited items at the Polokwane Police Cells earlier today (Tuesday).

The suspects, aged 28 and 30, are expected to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Wednesday, February 11).

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the arrests to Polokwane Observer in a written statement this evening.

Ledwaba said the circumstances under which the prohibited items were smuggled into the holding cells will form part of a broader investigation.

However, he stressed that he could not reveal the identities of the suspects, in line with legal requirements.

“Unfortunately, the suspects’ identities cannot be disclosed until their court appearance on Wednesday,” Ledwaba said.

He added that the matter has been brought to the attention of provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, who has instructed Capricorn District Commissioner Major General Lesiba Mashilo to conduct a full investigation and provide feedback as soon as possible.

This follows a tip-off received by Polokwane Observer earlier today regarding the arrest of a high-profile musician, Lehlogonolo Katlego Shebeshxt Chauke, currently being held at the Polokwane Holding Cells.

According to the source, the charge follows the discovery of prohibited items, including a smartphone, charger, empty sachets containing remnants of an unknown substance and a drug-smoking pipe.

The musician is scheduled to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on February 18 on several charges.

This is a developing story.
