WATCH: Shebeshxt-linked case not yet enrolled, NPA confirms

The NPA has confirmed receipt of the docket relating to two awaiting-trial prisoners at Polokwane holding cells, but says the matter has not yet been enrolled pending further police work.

POLOKWANE – Following police confirmation of the arrest of two awaiting-trial prisoners for the possession of drugs and other prohibited items at the Polokwane holding cells yesterday, NPA provincial spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi has confirmed that the docket has been received by the senior public prosecutor at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.

This follows a statement issued by SAPS indicating that the suspects, aged 28 and 30, would appear in court today.

However, the matter has not yet been enrolled.

“It was not enrolled because there are still outstanding issues that SAPS needs to finalise. We are hoping that by the 18th they will have completed what they were instructed to do,” NPA Provincial Spokesperson Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi said.

She further confirmed that the allegations relate to musician Lehlogonolo “Shebeshxt” Chauke.

Malabi-Dzhangi noted that the NPA cannot disclose the specific charges at this stage, as the docket has been sent back to the investigating officers for further work.

Defence lawyer Lot Ramusi, who represented the musician, said he had been informed that his client was facing charges which he believes are legally unfounded.

“I can confirm that no drugs were found in my client’s possession. That is incorrect. Upon making representations, it became clear that these charges cannot stand, and we are back to square one,” he said.

The case involving musician Shebeshxt is scheduled to resume on Wednesday, February 18, at the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.
