Polokwane International Airport upgrades systems

Polokwane International Airport successfully completes the upgrade and calibration of its VOR navigation system to enhance aviation safety.

POLOKWANE – Aviation stakeholders using Polokwane International Airport welcomed the successful completion of its upgrade and calibration of the Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range (VOR) navigation system.

This tool will enhance aviation safety and operational procedures.

According to the spokesperson of the airport, Tshepo Ramokgopa, the upgrade is part of a project that will include the acquisition of an Instrument Landing System (ILS).

The two navigation aids complement each other as they increase the reliability of airport operations, reducing the likelihood of flight interruptions due to weather or technical issues.

Ramokgopa explained that the navigation system is essential for precise guidance during departure, arrival and terminal instrument approaches, ensuring safe transitions from enroute to final approach.

The calibration process, conducted in accordance with international aviation standards by South African Civil Aviation Authority (Sacaa), confirms that the system is operating accurately and reliably.

“Upgrading the navigation aid to newer technology highlights ongoing efforts to improve aviation infrastructure, ensuring compliance with global regulatory requirements and reinforcing Polokwane International Airport’s commitment to safe and secure airport operations,” Ramokgopa said.

He added that aviation stakeholders, including airlines, pilots, and air traffic management personnel, are advised that the system is available for normal operational use with immediate effect.
