Police foil alleged robbery plot, arrest 5 in Thohoyandou

Police in Limpopo arrested five suspects and confiscated firearms, ammunition and burglary tools during an operation in Thohoyandou.

LIMPOPO – Limpopo police have arrested five men after an intelligence-driven operation in Thohoyandou on May 17, allegedly linked to planned business and house robberies.

According to police, information was received about suspects travelling from Polokwane to the Thohoyandou policing area, where they were allegedly planning to commit robberies.

The information was operationalised by police members together with the Tactical Response Team (TRT) in the Vhembe District.

Police spokespersons said officers later intercepted a gold Nissan Tiida in the Thohoyandou CBD that matched the description of the vehicle linked to the alleged plot.

During a search of the vehicle, police allegedly recovered two unlicensed firearms and several rounds of ammunition. Five occupants were arrested.

The suspects include three Zimbabwean nationals, aged 33, 39 and 40, and two South African nationals, aged 30 and 36.

Police also confiscated handcuffs and a bolt cutter, which are believed to have been intended for use in criminal activities. The vehicle has been seized as part of the investigation.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (May 19), on charges relating to the alleged possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Police said additional charges could be added as investigations continue.

Limpopo police commissioner Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe commended officers involved in the operation for their vigilance and proactive response.
