Tax season 2026: Simplified forms and faster assessments
From auto assessments, simplified questions, and WhatsApp access, here's what taxpayers need to know about the 2026 tax season.
POLOKWANE – Better get your financial records in order as the 2026 personal income tax filing season is set to open, with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) preparing to roll out auto assessments and online submissions.
With millions of taxpayers expected to either receive refunds or face additional payments, SARS says accuracy of personal and financial information remains critical ahead of the new filing cycle.
Tax filing dates for 2026
- Auto assessments: July 1 – July 12
- Non-provisional taxpayers: July 13 – October 23
- Provisional taxpayers: July 13 – January 22 (2027)
- Trusts: July 13 – January 22 (2027)
How auto assessments work
SARS uses its auto assessment system to pre-calculate tax returns using information supplied by third parties such as employers, medical schemes, banks, retirement funds and insurers.
In many cases, taxpayers will not need to submit a return if the information is complete and accurate.
Taxpayers selected for auto assessment will receive an SMS or email between July 1 and July 12, indicating whether they are due a refund or owe SARS.
Those who do not receive a notification by July 12 must submit their own return (ITR12) from July 13 via the SARS system.
How to check your status
Taxpayers can confirm their auto assessment status through the online system by selecting the “My Auto Assessment Status” option.
If selected, individuals can review their assessment via South African Revenue Service eFiling or the SARS MobiApp.
If all details are correct, no further action is needed. If there are errors or missing information, taxpayers must update and submit an amended ITR12.
What’s new this tax season
SARS has introduced several updates aimed at simplifying the process:
- Pre-populated fields, including some investment income details
- A simplified ITR12 form with fewer repetitive questions
- Improved navigation and clearer prompts for users
- Updated medical aid dropdown lists to reduce errors
- WhatsApp access for selected SARS services
- Enhanced alerts to help identify issues early and avoid verification delays
- Improved links to notices of assessment (ITA34) and overdue return reminders
Reminder for taxpayers
While auto assessments are designed to make tax season easier and faster, SARS has stressed that taxpayers remain responsible for checking that all information is correct before accepting their outcome.
For assistance or more information, taxpayers are encouraged to visit the official SARS website or use the available digital platforms.
