POLOKWANE – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Limpopo has prepared 298 voter registration stations for residents of Polokwane in preparation for the upcoming registration weekend.

The registration drive takes place on June 20 and 21, ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections scheduled for November 4.

‘Only vote at the station where you are registered’

IEC reminded residents to make an effort to register, verify and update their voting details this weekend.

Provincial Electoral Commissioner Nkaro Mateta cautioned that local government elections are different from national and provincial elections in that voters may only vote at the voting station where they are registered.

“There will not be another chance to physically do so once the second registration drive set for August 1-2 is complete,” Mateta said, urging eligible citizens to do their best.

The municipality has 337 approved and listed voting stations covering urban and rural areas.

National update: 28 million voters registered

Echoing Mateta, Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo on Thursday said that South Africans who are not yet registered can still do so this weekend either online or at registration stations across the country.

“The voter registration weekend offers an opportunity to ensure that voters’ details are accurately captured and updated,” Mamabolo said.

He urged voters to check and update their residential addresses to ensure they are placed in the correct ward and voting district.

“The correct placement of voters in wards is crucial for the delivery of free and fair elections,” he noted.

The commission said its online self-service portal, launched in 2021, has become an important tool for voter registration and updates.

So far this year, the system has recorded more than 28 million registered voters, about 45% of the country’s population.

About 2 million registered voters in Limpopo

In Limpopo, Mateta said approximately 2 million people are registered to vote.

While the province has an eligible adult voting population of over 4 million, only about half have registered so far.
