Limpopo vehicle smuggler jailed for 20 years

Cross-border vehicle theft syndicates continue to target the province as courts clamp down with lengthy prison terms for those involved in the trade.

LIMPOPO – A 34-year-old man who admitted to helping transport stolen vehicles across South Africa’s borders has been sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment by the Polokwane Regional Court.

Mosa Allen Dlamini was convicted on charges including possession of stolen motor vehicles, fraud, money laundering and the falsification of vehicle registration number plates after entering into a plea and sentence agreement with the State.

Admission of role in vehicle smuggling network

According to the National Prosecuting Authority, Dlamini admitted that he worked as a “runner” for a vehicle-smuggling operation, transporting stolen vehicles through Limpopo border posts to neighbouring countries.

He also admitted to altering registration plates and tampering with engine numbers to hide the vehicles’ true identities and origins.

Three arrests across Limpopo

The court heard that Dlamini was arrested on three separate occasions between August 2024 and February 2025 in Polokwane, Musina and Louis Trichardt while in possession of two Toyota Land Cruisers and a Toyota Fortuner.

Investigations later revealed that the vehicles had been stolen in and around Pretoria and Johannesburg during 2024.

State argues for strong deterrence

During sentencing, State Advocate George Sekhukhune highlighted the growing problem of vehicle theft and cross-border smuggling, arguing that these crimes harm both the economy and public safety.

Although the State acknowledged that Dlamini had assisted law enforcement authorities in uncovering similar offences, prosecutors maintained that a lengthy prison sentence was warranted.

The State also raised concerns about Limpopo’s increasing use as a transit route for vehicle-smuggling syndicates and called for a sentence that would serve as a deterrent to others involved in the illegal trade.

The court agreed, imposing an effective sentence of 20 years’ direct imprisonment.

Prosecution commends investigative team

Limpopo Director of Public Prosecutions Adv Ivy Thenga praised the efforts of the prosecutor and investigating team, saying the successful prosecution demonstrates the justice system’s commitment to tackling organised vehicle theft and smuggling.

She said these crimes have a devastating effect on victims, undermine economic activity and erode public confidence in the criminal justice system.
