3 more arrested in alleged R38m Molemole fraud case
The latest arrests bring the number of accused in the matter to 13 as investigators continue to probe alleged procurement irregularities.
LIMPOPO – Three more people have been arrested in connection with an alleged R38m fraud and corruption case involving the Molemole Local Municipality.
Court appearance
The three accused, aged between 39 and 47, appeared in the Senwabarwana Magistrate’s Court on June 23. They face charges relating to alleged fraud and corruption.
Ongoing investigation
According to the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit in Limpopo, the arrests form part of an ongoing investigation into procurement processes at the municipality.
The Hawks allege that proper procurement procedures were not followed during the awarding of a contract. Investigators further claim that a service provider was paid before a service-level agreement had been signed and that fraudulent documents were allegedly used during the procurement process.
The alleged financial prejudice to the municipality exceeds R38m.
Identities withheld
The identities of the three accused have not been released as investigations are continuing.
The accused were granted bail of between R5 000 and R20 000. They are expected to join 10 co-accused when the matter returns to court on June 26.
The Hawks said the investigation remains ongoing and that further arrests could follow.
Limpopo Hawks Provincial Head, Major General Advocate Gopz Govender, commended the investigation team for the latest arrests.
“Public funds are not a playground for corruption. The Hawks will continue to follow the evidence without fear or favour until every person responsible is brought before the law,” Govender said.
