Police praise community cooperation as anti-foreigner protests passed peacefully
Acting provincial police commissioner Maj Gen Jan Scheepers has commended the coordinated efforts that ensured peace during recent anti-foreigner demonstrations.
LIMPOPO – The police have extended their appreciation to all role players who demonstrated cooperation and commitment in ensuring public safety, peace and stability during recent anti-foreigner demonstrations in the province.
Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers commended the collective efforts of law enforcement agencies, government departments, municipalities, the Border Management Authority, disaster management teams, community policing forums, traditional and religious leaders, the taxi industry, community-based organisations, businesses and other security stakeholders who worked alongside the police to safeguard communities and uphold the rule of law.
‘Limpopo is governed by the rule of law’
He also praised police members across the province for their professionalism, vigilance and swift response in preventing the escalation of incidents in affected areas.
Through high-visibility policing, intelligence-led operations, coordinated deployments and continuous community engagement, police ensured calm was restored and stability maintained.
“Limpopo has once again demonstrated that it is a province governed by the rule of law. Although we experienced challenges and some individuals attempted to exploit the situation through acts of criminality and public disorder, the coordinated response by law enforcement and our partners ensured that these incidents were swiftly contained.
“We remain committed to protecting every person within our province while enforcing the law without fear or favour,” said Scheepers.
Over 100 undocumented foreign nationals arrested
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the police, together with the relevant stakeholders, arrested over 100 undocumented foreign nationals during compliance and law enforcement operations.
He said the interventions form part of efforts to enforce the law while ensuring all actions remain within the Constitution.
‘Spirit of ubuntu’ during difficult period
SAPS thanked the public, businesses, faith-based organisations and Good Samaritans who donated essential items such as food, water, blankets and toiletries to individuals accommodated at temporary camps, saying the support reflected the spirit of ubuntu during a difficult period.
Heightened police presence to continue
Police said they will continue maintaining a heightened operational presence across the province, particularly in hotspot areas, through intelligence-driven operations, high-visibility patrols and rapid response deployments to ensure continued peace and stability.
They have urged the community to resolve their differences peacefully, respect constitutional rights and reject violence, intimidation, vigilantism and lawlessness, warning that criminal conduct will be dealt with decisively within the law.
